About Me
Born and raised in North Dakota, I have spent over half of my life in New York City. My goal is to help users have more efficient and effective experiences with their products, ultimately saving time and mental capacity for those things in life that matter the most.
Why UX Design?
I love helping people and I love solving puzzles; I’m also incredibly creative. I enjoy taking things apart and putting them back together, or even making them from scratch (as you’ll see from my cookies below). I genuinely enjoy connecting with people and learning from their experiences, empathizing with their frustrations, and helping them find creative solutions. I used these skills to build a very successful career in retail sales, training, and eventually management. COVID changed the world and I saw it as an opportunity to help people at a different scale. When I discovered the field of UX Design, I felt I had finally found where I belong.
Who am I?
Design has always been a part of my life. It was only once I started my coursework with Designlabs that I remembered the challenge of laying out our high school yearbook (I was the chief during my Junior and Senior years) or the joy of coding and creating websites during computer sciences class. I realized these skills had served me well when creating the Multisport email template for Front Runners New York when I was on the Board of Directors and worked to restructure and rebrand the committee to increase participation (yes, I’m one of those crazy endurance athletes-- and you can see more about that below). I also used my skills to become one of the top Custom Closet Designers when I was a Sales Person at The Container Store—and I’m still the person people call when they need to rethink how to use their space. My focus on detail may have led me to become the Manhattan Lead Visual Manager, but at home, I use my eye for design to create and bake elaborate Christmas cookies every year. I think that gives a good view of who I am: creative, full of ingenuity, good with people, unafraid to use my intuition, and eager to increase my own knowledge.
Now you know about me, I want to learn about you! What is your team working on? Do I seem like I could be a good fit?
Away from my computer…
Marathons and Triathlons
Give me a challenge and I will meet it! I started running in the summer of 2013 and I found a community in Front Runners New York, where I became heavily involved. Since I started long-distance racing in 2015, I have completed countless half marathons, 12 full marathons, and even a full Ironman Triathlon (that’s 140.6 miles for those not in the know). This picture is from the Dopey Challenge at Disney world, where you run a 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, and Full Marathon in the span of four days. The Disney Races are my favorite!
Baking
Make a mess but get the details right in the end! I like to have a recipe but make it my own and I do so every holiday season. My cookies are infamous amongst family, friends, and co-workers, and on average I make over 300 cookies during the holidays. Now you know why I swim, bike, and run so much! While my Black & Whites are the best, here you can see some of the detailed work I put into my Sugar Cookies.
Sewing and Costuming
Making a garment is the ultimate puzzle. Your material is not stiff so you can’t expect it to stay in one place. Shapes need to be dissected and recreated to ensure an item lay right. You have to create something three-dimensional out of a flat sheet, and it is amazing to see it come to life! My favorite is making costumes based on the characters and pictures that I am given. I am known for making racing costumes for myself and my friends.
Travel
I love getting insight from other people and cultures, and I’ve been hooked since my first time on an airplane at age 18! While I have traveled around the United States, I find the most joy in traveling internationally and learning about different cultures. My favorite travels are to Disney World, but if pressed, I would name Portugal as my top destination. This picture is from my trip to Bariloche, Argentina.
